Welcome to our natural World!
Cyprus boasts many areas of outstanding natural beauty, unspoilt country side, dramatic geology and impressive coast lines. At Zephyros, we are committed to protecting and preserving our precious environments and request that you remember a few points if you explore these areas, to protect your own safety and the fragile eco systems that you will encounter.
- please keep to recognized tracks and paths. Traveling in the wilderness damages plant and animal life. By keeping to paths you will minimize this damage.
- numerous plant and animal species in Cyprus are very rare or, in fact, unique. Please leave them for others to enjoy. Picking a beautiful flower not only destroys that individual but also adversely affects the ecosystems that the plant belongs to.
- do not drop litter. Please keep it with you until you are back in town and can dispose of it properly.
- whilst in Cyprus, you will come across a whole host of fascinating animals, birds, reptiles and insects. Uncaged, this is THEIR world and the only real way to see them. Nothing compares to watching a wild eagle soar, high over the rocks of the Avakas Gorge for example, but remember that we are visitors in their natural habitat, it is advisable not to disturb rocks or wood. Something might be living underneath!
- always wear enclosed shoes/boots when walking in the wilderness. Several species can sting or bite if they feel threatened.
- snakes will not attack a person unless provoked or threatened. Even then, they only bite as a last resort. Of the eight species of snake in Cyprus, 3 are venomous but only one can harm humans. The Blunt Nosed Viper. There are three features of this snake that will help you to identify it should you see one.
1. They are short, almost fat looking.
2. They have a diamond shaped head.
3. They are very well camouflaged, being a dull, sand/rock colour.
If you see any snake in Cyprus, you will not be in any danger providing that you leave it alone! Snakes are a beautiful and essential part of the wild life in Cyprus. Visit our good friends at the Snake George Reptile Park for more information/advice.
- please do not disturb, or interfere with, any agricultural areas.
- the sun in Cyprus can get VERY hot. Drink plenty of water, use sun block and wear a sun hat. Avoid midday sun and take it easy.
- take a map and know how to use it. Maps and advice are available free of charge from any Tourist Information Office in Cyprus or from Zephyros.
- driving in Cyprus can be a real eye opener! Wear your seat belt and watch your speed.
- please do not drive cars on the beaches. Not only does it damage these beautiful areas but you will get stuck!
- people living in some of the remote villages are extremely friendly and generous. Their life style may be very different from ours and we should show them respect and return their friendliness.
- there are many beautiful, Limestone gorges in Cyprus which offer spectacular views, great hiking and vast arrays of wildlife. But BE CAREFUL! These gorges experience occasional rock falls and flash floods, especially in Winter. You should not enter these gorges during or immediately after heavy rain. We also recommend that you wear a helmet when exploring some of the deeper gorges.
Whilst this list is by no means exhaustive, it should give you some pointers for enjoying yourself safely while exploring in Cyprus. Please contact us for free advice, maps and route planning..
